The Revenant is a 2015 American frontier revenge film[4] directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Written by Iñárritu and Mark L. Smith, based in part on Michael Punke's The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, the film is inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass in 1823 Montana and South Dakota. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Glass and co-stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter.[5]

Plot[edit]

In 1823, a quasi-military hunting party of trappers hunt for pelts in the unsettled wilderness of the Louisiana Purchase under the command of Andrew Henry. When they are ambushed by the Arikara Native Americans, a third of the party escapes on a boat. At the recommendation of Hugh Glass, a hunter with knowledge of the area and natives, they abandon the raft and begin the journey back to Fort Kiowa on foot. The decision is not welcomed by all, particularly John Fitzgerald, who distrusts Glass's half-native son Hawk. Glass stumbles upon and is badly mauled by a grizzly bear wildly defending her cubs. The party discover him close to death and carry him on a makeshift stretcher. Fitzgerald argues that Glass will not survive his injuries and that they should kill him to speed their journey. Unable to kill him, Henry offers payment for several men to stay behind with him instead. Fitzgerald, Hawk and the young Jim Bridger volunteer. Henry has Fitzgerald promise to stay with Glass until he dies and give him a proper burial.

Hawk discovers Fitzgerald smothering Glass. A struggle ensues and Fitzgerald kills Hawk while Glass helplessly watches. When Bridger returns, Fitzgerald tells him he saw the Arikara nearby and that they must abandon Glass. Bridger hesitates but flees with Fitzgerald, leaving Glass in a makeshift grave with his canteen. Glass regains consciousness, crawls out of the grave and walks through the woods for days, haunted by visions of his deceased Native wife. He escapes the Arikara, whose chief is searching for his kidnapped daughter Powaqa, by floating down rapids. Bridger realizes that Fitzgerald lied, but Fitzgerald intimidates him into silence. When they arrive at Fort Kiowa, Fitzgerald tells Henry that Glass succumbed to his wounds and that they lost Hawk, who was most likely attacked by the Arikara. Henry pays Fitzgerald his reward, but Bridger refuses payment.
